I'm sick of Adelaide dwellers complaining about having nothing to do and being bored in the city. This concise blog post will prove that these people's complaints are a result of their own ability to self entertain. I also have suspicions that these same people have a more serious issue with commitment.
I don't believe your surroundings should entertain you. I think you can find joy and happiness wherever you are and moving from place to place isn't going to fix that which makes you feel bored or uneasy about where you dwell. Find what truly makes you happy and then look for that in your home. The extra effort will be extra satisfying, I promise.
Anyway, here are 10 reasons why Adelaide is NOT boring....
1. Malls Balls
Seriously, think about the thought process, of sculptor Bert Flugelman, that went behind the erection of this masterpiece.Also, seriously, look a bit harder. Adelaide has a very proud arts culture and there are hidden corners of this city waiting to be seen hiding some amazing, eclectic displays of artistic talent. Check with any of the Adelaide councils for any of their arts offerings and go from there.
2. Adelaide Oval
Nothing beats the feeling of sitting at Adelaide Oval on a warm Saturday or Sunday afternoon, feeling the soft, crushed grass under your sweaty bum, holding a plastic cup with some really bad tasting beer watching some kind of sport. What a MARVELOUS venue and backdrop of sitting around doing nothing enjoying some kind of sport of international class.
3. The Adelaide Hills
All season round, the Adelaide Hills has something to offer. The simple act of driving around the winding roads up to Mount Lofty exposes you to some magnificent views and nature that might not litter your well traveled route to work Monday - Friday. Fresh cool air, gum trees and wildlife are the truly Australian backdrop to this paradise, minutes away from the city centre.
4. Piccadilly Cinema
It's old school and this is how movies are meant to watched. Small cinema, small screens, doorbells ringing to warn you the movie is about to start, musty curtains lining the walls and squashy seats. Now that's a cinema.
5. Beehive Corner
Does anyone have a shop like that anywhere else in the world that sells award winning chocolate? I don't think so.
6. Seacliff Beach (and subsequently all beaches south of that spot except Christies because you'll get stabbed)
White sand and beautiful views without having the people of the meat market of Glenelg swarming around like flies.
7. Belair National Park and Thorndan Park
If you ever complain about having nothing to do, get your ass off the couch and get down to either of these parks with a dog/niece/nephew/tennis racquet/friends.
8. Adelaide Comedy
Probably one of the best kept secrets on Adelaide. The guy who runs it must do it out of love. Local and international comics almost every night of the week for less than a price of a movie ticket. You're stupid if you haven't been already
9. Coffee
The Parade, O'Connell Street, Rundle Street, Jetty Road (Glenelg) - Take your pick.
10. Linear Park Bike Track
A bike track that takes you from the city centre to the coast along the river Torrens. You're dumb if you don't do it. Amazing scenery at bike pace that every local should experience at least once during their existence.
